SCREAMIN' FROM THE CHEAP SEATS by Leo Haggerty PFWA
SCREAMIN' FROM THE CHEAP SEATS. So who has incurred my wrath today? None other than the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Selection Committee and this is a warning shout.
Do not even attempt to try and reward an at large berth to a Power 5 team over a mid major conference champion. Don't try to insult my intelligence by trying to to perpetrate this hoax that a middle-of-the-conference or lower team like Vanderbilt or Mississippi State plus TCU and Kansas State along with Ohio State deserves the go dancing over teams like Memphis and UC San Diego plus Akron along with Drake or New Mexico. There are others but this will do for now as an example.
And don't try an even waste your breath by trying to convince me that those Power 5 bottom feeders deserve to receive an invite to March Madness because of how tough their conference schedule happens to be. How able get better and win more games.
Of course you all know that when I make a suggestion I will always have a solution. No different this time either my fellow readers and listeners and it's an extremely simple one at that.
The NCAA should have this hard and fast rule. You can only qualify for the Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament as an at large entry IF you finish 500 or better in your conference.
And, before you start thinking that all this would do is water down the tournament with a bunch of mid major that don't belong, think AGAIN. All I have to do is remind you, in case you've forgotten, that two of the participants in the 2023 Final Four were mid major San Diego State and Florida Atlantic. Also, those two programs gave the nation arguably the most exciting contest in Final Four history when Lamont Butler hit a jumper as time expired to send the Aztecs to the finals with a heartstopping 72-71 victory over the Owls.
So, don't try and sell me on the fact that the regular season conference champion from a mid major doesn't belong just because they couldn't win three games in three day. If you are, I'm not buying it. Hopefully, the Selection Committee won't buy it either.
Book it Dano!
