WHAT’S BROKE & NEEDS FIXING by Leo Haggerty PFWA
WHAT’S BROKE & NEEDS FIXING. I believe the challenge system in the NBA is broke. Here’s what I would suggest to fix it.
Now coaches have only one challenge a game. I would amend that to increase to one a half. Now here’s the caveat.
It’s a “use it or lose it” proposition. If you don’t use your first half challenge it doesn’t roll over to the second 24 minutes.
This would allow coaches to not worry about using their challenging early in the contest and not having one left at the end of the tilt when the decision most of the time determines the outcome..
Here's an example. If Minnesota didn’t have a challenge left in Game 4 against Los Angeles the turnover would have stood. Instead it was changed to a foul extended the Timberwolves advantage to 3 points after two made free throws forcing the Lakers to take a shot beyond the arc that they missed instead of any shot because the deficit would have only been a point. Enough said right?
