THOUGHTS FROM  A SEPTUAGENARIAN. One specific change that has occurred over my 70 plus years on this planet is the attitude of people have when they are stopped by an officer of the law. I believe the major reason for that is the advice young people have received from the significant adults, such as parents and relatives and trusted friends, about how to act when a policeman or policewoman are detaining them for whatever reason. The advice I received, along with a preponderance of males and females from my generation, was simple and succinct. First, keep your hands on the steering wheel. Second, if you are going to make any sudden moves, such as reaching for the glove compartment for your registration, announce to "person in blue" what you will be doing. Finally, and this one is the most important, do exactly what the cop tells you to do. My father, rest his soul, emphasized that statement by exclaiming, "Son, if the officer tells you to eat dirt you ask for a spoon." When I asked why he responded, "Because the guy with the gun always wins." If you have a complaint about the way you're being treated, that is not the time or the place to get confrontational. Today, it's like a majority of people want to become combative and obstinate with the police and that always leads to a bad outcome. Sports celebrity examples are golfer Scottie Scheffler and Miami Dolphins Tyreek Hill who both ended up handcuffed for a traffic violation on the way to compete. Hill stated later that "I should have handled this better." That's an understatement. Just follow directions whether you agree with them or this may be the next three words you hear. Book it Dano!
