THOUGHTS FROM A SEPTUAGENARIAN by Leo Haggerty PFWA
THOUGHTS OF A SEPTUGENARIAN. After 3 score and 11 years on planet earth I am truly amazed on how the NFL has changed. A complete metamorphosis especially when we just look at the position of quarterback and I firmly believe it's all about the money.
Back 70 years ago, the QB was fair game for a group of feasting defensive lineman. These groups of devouring pass rushers even had monikers. The Purple People Eaters and The Fearsome Foursome just to highlight a couple.
Their job, and like the prologue to the TV series Mission Impossible, was to reach the quarterback and inflict as much damage as possible. To say these demons in the trenches accepted that proposition was an understatement.
Deacon Jones. Alan Page. Bob Lilly. Willie Davis. Jim Marshall. Gene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb. Just to name a few and there are many others whose names alone brought a terror to opposing signal callers.
Flash forward to the National Football League in 2024. Almost every sack of an NFL QB by those Hall of Fame defensive lineman would now be construed as Roughing the Passer.
I was so happy to hear Troy Aikman, who was doing commentary on Monday Night Football, after a sack of Jets QB Aaron Rodgers by Bills DE A.J. Epenesa for "body weight on the QB" expounding, "I can't agree with that call." Even Rodgers looked embarrassed by the flag being thrown.
My loyal followers, that's a former NFL QB pontificating on the state of the game. That's enough verification for me to say today's QBs are almost unhittable for defenders. Drop the mic.
Book it Dano.
