SCREAMIN' FROM THE CHEAP SEATS by Leo Haggerty PFWA
SCREAMIN’ FROM THE CHEAP SEATS. What am I screamin' about today? I'm yellin' at the media because it took them so long to come around to my way of thinking on this specific subject.
So, let me set the stage for you. On ESPN TV GET UP Friday morning, guest host Matt Barrie finally has brought an issue to the a national stage that I have been screamin’ about for over a year. That topic is using slow motion instant replay to determine if a hit by a player on an opponent is egregious.
Now, before someone goes jumping into the deep end, I have never advocated that the use of slow motion should be eliminated entirely from the review process. It is extremely beneficial when determining numerous situations such as did a player have both feet inbounds went making a catch or did a player fumble the pigskin before they were down. Slo Mo helps in those cases.
When it comes to determining whether a late hit occurred, slow motion replay does not give a true indication of what just transpired on the gridiron. Barrie added this important salient point when he emphasized that the game isn't played in slow motion. So I've been harping on for over a year why review in Slo Mo?
I have been clamoring for the powers that be in the NFL to mandate this very situation. Players, especially quarterbacks, wait until the last minute to side (check out the hit on Jacksonville Jaguars signal caller Trevor Lawrence) or fake a slide (pick any one of a plethora from Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes) to continue running. Reviews for that should only be permitted at full speed to see if the defender had time and space to avoid the contact.
Finally, someone in the national media has added his voice to mine. Maybe Matt finally heard me screamin' and agreed with my frequent outbursts.
Now we have to hope that the hierarchy of The Shield takes a serious look at adopting my suggestion. That will force quarterbacks to slide earlier especially once replay officials, after further review, start to rule in favor of the defenders because there was no reasonable way for them to alter their tackling angel.
Book it Dano!
