8/3 - SCREAMIN’ FROM THE CHEAP SEATS by Leo Haggerty PFWA
SCREAMIN’ FROM THE CHEAP SEATS. Who has incurred my vocal wrath today. NFL fans over the results of preseason football games.
First of all keep in mind that winning an exhibition game, as I like to refer to preseason tilts, is an afterthought. The main goal is to evaluate talent during game conditions to trim a 90 man training camp squad down to a 53 man regular season roster. Coming out on the left side of the dash when the game ends is nice but not the prime directive.
So let’s do a little research shall we. Has there ever been a team that has lost all of their preseason games and made it to the Super Bowl? The answer is yes and I’ll bet the number will surprise you.
That occurred on four occasions. The 1990 Buffalo Bills along with the 2000 New York Giants both didn’t win a preseason contest and made it to the Super Bowl but were defeated. The 1982 Washington Redskins went 0-4 and the 2021 Los Angeles Rams were 0-3 going into the regular season yet managed to claim the Lombardi Trophy.
Here’s an even better stat. The 2008 Detroit Lions were the only team in NFL history to go 0-16. Want to take a wild guess what their preseason record was Buddy? If you said 4-0 you nailed it.
So as you can plainly see the preseason has no bearing on how the regular season will unfold. Just a bunch of exhibition games until the games that really matter commence.
BOOK IT DANO!
