6/25 - BREAKING NEWS by Leo Haggerty PFWA
BREAKING NEWS. As Major League Baseball draws close to the midpoint of the 2025 campaign I don’t believe anyone foresaw the team with the best record being the Detroit Tigers. I sure as heck didn’t.
The Motor City Gang has fashioned a MLB best 50-30 log and are currently leading the American League Central Division by 9.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians. If you do the math, as I always encourage you to do, that equates to right around 100 wins if the Cats can keep up this pace.
How did Detroit do it you ask Buddy? Let’s start with pitching and Tarik Skubal is having a Cy Young year posting a 9-2 record with a 2.29 ERA along with an excellent .87 WHIP. Add to that staff Rookie of the Year candidate Jackson Jobe who has a 4-1 log and a respectable 4.22 ERA.
Cannot discount the effect manager A.J. Finch has had on the ball club. The Waverly IA native has a World Series Championship ring and has instilled a competitive and smart style of play that makes the Tigers a tough matchup for any team.
You can’t ignore the offense that shows up at Comerica Park either. LF Riley Green who’s having a career year with his .299 BA along with 17 HR plus 61 RBI and a .890 OPS and the addition of 2B Gleyber Torres providing a.281 BA and both 38 RS and RBI has propelled the Stripes to the 5th best run scoring machine in the Big Leagues with just north of 5 runs a contest.
This team is for real. If they can stay healthy, and that’s always a big it, the road to the World Series should lead through 2100 Woodward Avenue.
That would be special for a franchise who last hoisted the World Series trophy was 1984. That's a 40 year drought could come to an end in 2025.
