7/17 - TAMPA BAY SPORTS SCENE by Leo Haggerty PFWA
TAMPA BAY SPORTS SCENE. The big sports news in Tampa Bay is the reported sale of the Rays. With that being said, I’m hoping two enormous questions will be answers.
The first one is to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. Has MLB agreed to financially subsidize the new ownership group in any capacity until a new stadium can be built?
I would assume some financial considerations have been made. If they haven’t then the new owners are looking at a substantial loss in revenue until 2028 when a new stadium would become operational.
The second is to the St. Petersburg City Council and Pinellas County Commission. If the team is sold in your eyes does that make the contract to restore Tropicana Field to playing condition null and void?
This is a huge one. If the new owners decide to build a new stadium outside of St. Pete why would the city and county want to refurbish the Trop to demolish it 3 years later.
Hope someone asks those couple of queries to those specific parties. If not I’ll have to do it myself right Buddy?
BOOK IT DANO!
