6/29 - SCREAMIN’ FROM THE CHEAP SEATS by Leo Haggerty PFWA
SCREAMIN’ FROM THE CHEAP SEATS. I’m vociferously yelling at those individuals that are clamoring for golf courses that host PGA sanctioned events to increase the degree of difficulty of their venue. Need to stop that nonsense and here's why.
We all get a chance to see what the greatest golfers in the world do in the most challenging conditions at the Grand Slam events. The narrowness of the fairways at The Masters. U.S. Open rough. Battling also Mother Nature at The Open. The oppressive heat at The PGA. These are the ultimate tests of golf and a 72 hole score of par is considered good. Anything in red figures is excellent.
Now the other events on the PGA Tour are not as difficult for obvious reasons. Wider fairways. Lighter rough. Less undulating greens. Shorter distances tee to green. All combine for lower scores.
Notice I did not use the word easy Buddy. Haven’t played or seen a tract that ever was easy. Some like the above mentioned are more forgiving of an errant shot then others but not one falls into the category of easy.
Plus do not forget for one iota that these guys are really good. Best example is The Rocket Classic where participants will be completing their final round today. Just imagine that there are players starting their last 18 holes at -13 par and are still tied with a dozen others and trailing 21. That’s the kind of excellence you get to witness on the links or on your couch next to the TV with an adult beverage if you so desire.
My advice is to stop bellyaching about how easy these courses are with score in the -15 to -30 under par range. How about appreciating the greatness of this group of golfers that can consistently post these low number that make for Must See TV.
