WHAT’S BROKE & NEEDS FIXING by Leo Haggerty PFWA
WHAT’S BROKE & NEEDS FIXING. Sometimes you may need to keep things in the status quo. Why you ask? That’s because if it isn’t broke you leave it alone and the National Football League owners are facing that predicament this week.
A proposal put forth by the Detroit Lions would radically change the NFL playoff seeding. Currently the division winners receive the top four seeds with the wild card teams seeded by records in the divisional round. If adopted that would change to teams being seeded strictly on their regular season record in the divisional round.
That would mean a wild card team could be seeded higher than a division winner if they had a better record. That would guarantee the wild card team a home game in the opening round over a division winner. Sounds crazy.
This would be a huge mistake for NFL owners to approve this proposal. There is nothing wrong with the current format. Win your division and you get either a bye or a home playoff game. Simple right?
Don’t complicate this. There’s nothing wrong with the playoff seeding process. It ain’t broke so don’t fix it.
