RECORDS THAT WON’T BE BROKEN. The premier National Hockey League event, the Stanley Cup finals, are opening Wednesday with a repeat performance by the defending champion Florida Panthers and the runner up Edmonton Oilers. That’s a perfect Segway to today’s record that won’t be broken and that’s consecutive Stanley Cup triumphs.

That mark stands at 5 and is owned by the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs accomplished this feat beginning with the 1955-56 season and culminating with the 1959-60 campaign.

There are two organizations that have captured 4 straight Stanley Cup championships. One is the same Canadiens from 1975-76 to 1978-79. The other four-peat belongs to the New York Islanders starting right at the end of the Montreal dynasty in 1979-80 and went until 1982-83.

Since then no team has made it past back to back titles. The Pittsburgh Penguins twice and the Detroit Red Wings plus the most recent entry with the Tampa Bay Lightning once each.

Yes it’s possible for a team to string 5 Stanley Cups in a row but extremely unlikely. With the era of free agency plus now 32 teams along with extensive travel with excess of 100 games every season you can take it to the bank that this record will never be toppled.

Book it Dano!
