THOUGHTS FROM A SEPTUAGENARIAN. In my 3 score and a dozen years on this rock one thing that has really gone through a metamorphosis is the National Basketball Association. I’m specifically to the artificially created super teams.

Now, I have no trouble with how teams became great in the 1950’s through the end of the century by drafting and trading. The last franchise to accomplish this was San Antonio. The Spurs expertly drafted Hall of Famers David Robinson and Tim Duncan plus Manu Ginobili along with Tony Parker. Throw in two other draftees in Sean Elliot and Victor Wembanyama then add one with one of the best trades in NBA history when the franchise acquired future Hall of Famer Kawhi Leonard. That’s how teams became great.

Today, it’s like players are trying to manipulate the system to come up with an NBA championship team through free agency. Not drafting or trading for players but letting their contracts expire so they can move to whatever team they choose. LeBron James and Kevin Durant are perfect examples of that.

Can you imagine Larry Bird and Magic Johnson conspiring to play together? Michael Jordan and Carl Malone? Oscar Robertson and Jerry West? Those guys were too competitive to even think about that.

I’m not saying it’s wrong to try and put together a super team to win at least one championship but multiple rings. That’s the free agency way of life in The Association. I’m just saying that the biggest change that I’ve witnessed in my lifetime and I’m old school.

Don’t buy a title. Draft or trade for it.

Book it Dano!
