BREAKING NEWS. At the NFL spring meetings in the Minnesota Twin Cities suburb of Eagen, the proposal to ban the Tush Push needed 24 votes to eliminate it from the gridiron. The play that has been popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles will remain with 22 of the 32 franchises voting for the ban falling short of the 75% needed but it wasn’t without some headed debate.
Numerous sources have reported that the owner of the Birds Jeffrey Lurie made an impassioned Hail Mary speech that lasted almost an hour defending the play. Former Philly center Jason Kelce also lobbied the group in favor of allowing the what looks like more like a rugby scrum than a QB sneak. This led to what was described as a very heated exchange between NFL owners and league executives.
With the vote being this close, expect this issue to not vanish into the night. I would not be surprised if another proposal surfaces next year especially if it is perceived that the team from the City of Brotherly Love is getting an advantage by being the only team that can successfully accomplish this play.
So at least for the 2025 season the Tush Push will still be a legal play. Don’t be shocked if teams try to devise some novel methods of defending it.
Can’t wait to see how that transpires. Should be must see TV.
