THOUGHTS FROM A SEPTUAGENARIAN. As I continue on my 72nd orbit around that big yellow ball in the sky I’ve contemplated how sports have really changed over that time frame. Here are some example of how the 4 major North American professional leagues have morphed into what they are today from what they were 7 decades ago.

Basketball. The 3 point line in 1979. Has completely revamped how the game is played both offensively and defensively.

Baseball. The designated hitter in 1973. Now instead of what was almost an automatic out when the pitcher came to the dish has transpired into the insertion into the lineup of another big bat.

Football. The moving of the goal post in 1974. Relocated from the goal line to the back of the end zone making a field goal a more difficult proposition plus safety reasons.

Hockey. Wearing of face masks and helmets in 1979. Has gone from no one wearing protective headgear to being a mandatory piece of equipment especially for goalies.

As you can see all of the above changes have had a profound effect on people like myself who have been a serious fan since the 1950s. I cannot endorse the fact that all of these developments have made the games better but they have made them safer as well as move exciting.

I know this makes me feel old. You?
