BREAKING NEWS. Here’s a news flash. The Indiana Fever have had enough. They have drawn a line in sand and sent a message to all the teams in the WNBA that things have radically changed in Indianapolis from the way you defended Caitlin Clark in the past.

Last year #22 took the league by storm. She was arguably the best player in the WNBA but no debate in the fact that she was the best long range sniper.

Opposition teams couldn’t stop her so what did they do. They chose to get physical with the University of Iowa star. Body her up and knock her down when she’s on offense. On defense run her off numerous hard screens every possession.  Basically beat Clark up to see if she’s tough enough to compete under those conditions.

Now do not assume that this is dirty play. It’s done at all levels of hoops from high school on up. If a player was torching us our coach just said let’s bring the heat. Put a body on him. Bang him every chance you get. Knock him into the bleachers a couple times after he shoots. See if the contact affects his play.

Well the Fever saw all of this last year and they knew they needed an enforcer. Someone to protect their biggest asset and to send a message that this will no longer be tolerated without repercussions.

Enter Sophie Cunningham. Indiana traded with the Phoenix Mercury for her this year and she’s not just a really good basketball player but a black belt as well. Last night after Clark experienced some extremely hard fouls #8 decided to even the score with a hard foul of her own.

The 6’1” shooting guard took Connecticut Sun guard Jacy Shelton to the floor in a game that the outcome was already decided. As expected a melee occurred with Cunningham and two others being ejected.

That foul sent a message to the rest of the WNBA. If you’re going to go after Clark the Fever and especially Cunningham are going to retaliate in kind.

From now on it’s an eye for an eye. No turning the other cheek like last year. If you’re going to dish it out on Indiana especially Clark you better be ready to take it because it's coming right back at you.
